Lower back pain in cyclists

A flexed spine held for hours, plus power driven through the hips, adds up to lower back pain for a lot of riders. I treat it with hands-on remedial soft tissue therapy in Paddington, Brisbane.

Why cycling loads your lower back

The riding position holds the lower back in sustained flexion while the hips drive the pedals. Hold that for hours, ride after ride, and the lower back feels it.

Where it starts

Hips and glutes that are not sharing the load and a stiff mid-back push more onto the lower back. I treat the chain, and flag anything that looks like a fit issue.

How the treatment works

Assessment

I take your history, watch how you move, and use orthopaedic testing to rule things in or out. Black and white: positive or negative.

Treatment

Hands-on soft tissue work, with real time on the table. I treat the whole area involved, not just the point of pain.

Education

You leave understanding your own body. A few sessions in, you can tell me what is happening and why. That is what keeps it from coming back.

Common questions

Is it my bike fit or my body?

Usually both matter. Fit changes the load, but the tissue that is already irritated still needs treating. I treat the body and flag fit where it is relevant.

Is this a sports massage?

No. This is clinical treatment for a specific problem, not a general relaxation rub down.
